They say the House Always Wins....
Well, that couldn’t have been any truer last Thursday night when Matt and Carrie hosted Rooftop poker and Carrie took home the “lion’s share” of the grand-prize money. For those of you that were “out of town” (i.e. didn’t want to drive to the valley) – you missed a great event. There were plenty of snacks and barbecued hot dogs for all as seven players duked it out under the stars.
Claiming it was only the second time she’s every played, Carrie was unstoppable with a record four full-houses during the game. Other players quickly learned to get out of her way if there was even a low-pair showing on the board, because invariably she would have a pocket-pair that would trip-up to make a full-house by the river. Her hands included KKK22, 44433, 44455, and 55599 (this one she didn’t show, but we all knew she had it).
Even more impressive, however, was the way she busted out the competition in the first 4th Street Poker Tour three-way all-in showdown for the final hand. With only three players left in the game, Jeff and Josh were severely short-stacked to Carrie’s massive fortress of chips. Jeff decided to go all-in with AK. Josh called with KJ and Carrie called right behind them both with a pocket pair of 9s. The flop came 8, 7, 8, 4, 6 – making Carrie two-pair to win the game (we were all very surprised she didn’t hit another full-house). As we were only paying out to 2nd place, we had to call upon our World Poker Tour gurus Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten to recognize that Josh would take home second place since he had three more chips than Jeff going into the showdown.
Highlights
Matt sitting stone faced for a full ten minutes while Josh hemmed and hawed (and even purposefully flashed his cards) trying to decide whether to call his All-In.
Another great “Rookie” moment when Josh called out “Skip” and then “Pass,” trying to remember the correct term – “Check.” I hate to break it to you, Josh – we weren’t playing Uno…
