4th Street Poker Tour

Complex Slim takes on the WPT Invitational

Those of you who played in last week's game know that instead of tournament directing for 4th Street, Slim took the night off to play in and ultimately win a World Poker Tour corporate freeroll tournament. His prize was an entry in this weekend's WPT Invitational. 400+ people are expected to attend including "celebrities" such as Coolio, Brian Baumgartner from the Office (the chubby guy), Jason Alexander, Camryn Manheim, James Woods and Mimi Rogers squaring off against big name pros such as JC Tran, Joe Pelton, Joe Seebok, Nam Le and Carlos Mortensen. First place gets $100,000 and a seat into the $25,000 buy-in WPT Championship.

Tonight's action starts at 7pm with 40 tables playing down to 3. You can keep track of his progress on Live Updates on WPT.com. His Live Updates team will be tracking Slim's progress (expect his table to have the most accurate chip counts) and he'll even be blogging from the event. Who knows, you might even see him on a webcam interview with Kimberly Lansing.

Cold run of cards? Check. Lose with QQ to seven high on the bubble? Check. Bitch and moan about bad luck? Check. Seemed like a typical Thursday night for me this week. Then the mojo changed as Pick was whispering his "Believe" in my ear. Big hands started to come, they held, and I rode the wave to a marathon heads-up battle with the Wou-tang. It was a battle that lasted over 2 1/2 levels and ended with the blinds at an astronomical 3k - 6k. The back and forth finally ended at 1.30am and I sat dizzy from the ups and downs of what was the ride to my 7th 4SPT title.

Thanks to King for hosting. Next week, a special Valentine's Day game at the most romantic venue on Tour -- Booty Town.

WS III Game 7 Results

You might not believe it but I'm this week's winner, I  guess the poker gods called in sick for the night.

I took Shock G's comment as an assult and defended all that is right on the Tour. Complexer Mister Pibb stood with me as we showed the Westside this is how we do.

4th Street Consistency

Last night a situation arose that ultimately led to the Tour's "consistency", along with my personal integrity to be called into question in front of everyone. I would like to highlight this situation to help you all know where I am coming from.

Below is the what happened:

Player A and player B go into a flop heads up. After the flop, Player B moves all-in out of turn and player A calls. Before the cards are turned over both players realize that the action occurred out of turn. I was then asked for a ruling to which I made the declared action stand.

It was this ruling that was called into question once player B lost the pot. Since there was a question as to how this was handled I decided to find out for sure if indeed I had made the correct call, so I emailed none other that Mr. TD himself with the situation. Here is his reply:

Yes, the action still stands as it is accepted action.

Now, having the 4th Street's "consistency" called out in front of the entire Tour does not sit well with me - ever. As you are all very well aware I take a great pride in providing a tournament where you can show up, get as drunk as you damn well feel like it, never pay attention to any of the action, never have to worry if the antes are all paid, never have to worry about who gets moved into what table, etc etc. Basically, I try to make it easier on everyone to play, so that the only things you need to worry about are showing up on time and deciding whether to bet, raise, call, or fold. 

I've done everything I can to acheive this goal, I've spent more time researching rules that will come into play once every two years and I've made sure that I have every detail just right so we can have a good time without arguing over who is right and who is wrong.

I take all questions and concerns very seriously. Most of you know that if you've ever had a problem with a ruling, or the blind structure, or the type of cards we use, or the point system, or anything else, that I am more than open to hearing you out and making appropriate changes. However, it becomes very personal to me when my intergrity is called out in front of everyone. I have no vendettas against any of you, I've never made or not made a ruling because of who was involved in a hand. I've even ruled against my own favor several times. The point is, I put a lot hard work into making sure the Tour runs at a very high standard. I have no problem with someone questioning an actual ruling and wanting to make sure I got it right, it happens all of the time. But for anyone to infer that I made a ruling against them for personal reasons and that was not consistent with other rulings is just plain wrong.

In my mind the 4th Street Poker Tour and consistency are synonymous.

Answers to a "Couple Things"

Since this comment was so awesome, and by so awesome of course we mean so sweet, we thought it deserved it's own post so that we can clear up any misunderstandings that our normally clear-headed, and by clear-headed we mean red-headed, friend might have.

First the comment:

-Thanks to Dino for hosting last night. I think I had more fun standing over the table distracting people than I would have if I had been in the tourney.

-The above paragraph by Keith is fuckin awesome. And by awesome, I mean totally sweet.

- Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoA! How the FACK am I only worth 10% when all of you Chaunceys are worth 30? Holsey- I must take issue with this. What the FACK? Johnny CALLLS all-in with 10 6 off and I lose 20% of my hard-earned value? I should be charging appearance fees and this is what I get for my effort. HELLA LAME.

-That being said, when I played in my first 4th street game a year ago at Dino's place and failed to hit my flush against Charles' kings, I never thought that the standoffish guy with the funny glasses and his apple-toting standoffish girlfriend would end up becoming two of my most cherished friends, even though we've never really partied together. I know that my antics might annoy most of you guys, and I really couldn't care less, but I must say that what we have here is quite special. A truly eclectic group of good people spending time together each week trying to take each other's money. Let us use our time together tomorrow to get completely shit-faced and celebrate an era of fellowship that we will surely recall fondly and often when it is all said and done. And then I will have to turn the screws and fuckin RUIN you chaunceys because ten percent is fuckin bullshit.

Now for the answer:

We used a complex algebra II equation to figure out the percentages, so maybe that is why you are having a difficult time following along. Basically it goes like this:

- If Richie wasn't so scared to play in the Smoke 'Em then he would have received 30% of the bounty because he was far and away the leader in total points. Then 2nd - 4th would have been 20% and you bringing up the rear would have been 10%.

- Since Richie is too scared to play in the Smoke 'Em we reverted back to last year's structure when we had the top player missing and went with 30, 30, 30, 10.

- If you total the points for both the Overall and the Spring Season you will see that it is only fair that the three of us recieve the same percentage of the bounty as we are within 6 points of each other (117, 112, 111). You, on the other hand, are 13 points behind (98).

- The integrity of 4th Street is very important to me. I welcome feedback from our players and try to take all suggestions seriously. For instance, last night a player who wishes to remain anonymous, brought up the fact that we should outlaw blazers at the table. I listened and ruled accordingly. New rule, no blazers at the table unless you are Phil Gordon.
