Winter Season Game 12 Recap
The road to the Winter Season Championship was a slow and
steady one for the Slew. Making the Final Table an amazing 9 times in 12 weeks
helped him climb the leader board. And even though he never finished higher
than 3rd before last Thursday, he found himself sitting on top by
week 11. He only needed a 6th place finish to lock up the title, but
he was looking for a win.
It looked to be a huge night on the 4SPT. Heading into the final Winter Season game, four players had a shot at the title and the coveted St. Valentine’s Day Massacre Free Roll. Vonnnn Sannnndmannnn, KCBP, and King Richard all had their chance, if they could just hold off the Slew and make the Final Table. But the buzz quickly faded as these three could not chase down Kevin. Nope. No photo finish here. In fact, none of them even finished better than 18th! Once the KCBP went out, the Championship title was locked for Slew.
But you know, I’m always looking for a story angle. So once his competition fell, I turned to Slew and told him, “I will not allow another 4th place finish. It’s either out in 11th or you win.” And even though it’s taken me a week and a half to write this, I’m glad he listened.
Of course, his competition would have made for a good story too, as Slew was about to face another quietly successful Winter Season foe in Grubby. With WS 4th and 2nd place finishes under his belt, Grubby was looking to earn his first 4SPT win.
And he was well on his way to doing just that as he was terrorizing the Final Table. High Noon tried to stand up to him but he took her out in 5th place with trip 10s. Next up was John Collins who flopped a Queen and moved All-In but Grubby was there with the call. Grubby made his flush on the turn to send John home in 4th place. Then it was Cheyenne who figured he would try to bluff Grubby out of a hand but he chose the wrong spot as Dave had 2-pair and so 3rd place belonged to Cheyenne.
Knocking out three people in a row gave Grubby a mountain of
chips and left Slew with a big uphill battle for the crown. The official chip
count heading into the Heads-Up Showdown was $23,200 for Grubby and $8,800 for
Seattle Slew.
Slew would need to make some big moves if had any chance of pulling out the win. But when you are dealt pocket Kings, the moves come to you. The pocket Kings earned him a sizable pot but it still left him sitting on a very short stack.
When he was dealt the K10, Slew raised it up to $1,200. Grubby called and the flop came AJ2. Grubby led out for $2,000 and Slew was there with the call. The turn filled Slew’s flush when it brought the 9. Grubby checked and now it was just a matter of how much Slew could bet to elicit a call. He decided on $1,200, and sure enough Grubby called. The river was the 4 and again Grubby checked. One more value bet for Slew-- $1,800 this time--and again Grubby called. When Slew showed his King-high flush, Grubby surrendered by tossing his hand into the muck.
This huge hand rocketed Slew
into the lead.
A few hands later, Grubby looked down to find the KJ. He
raised it up $3,000 and Slew came over the top with an All-In re-raise.
Figuring this was a good chance to get back off of his chips, Grubby made the
call. It wasn’t good news for Grubby when Slew turned over the AK and it was
lights out when an A hit on the turn.
Seattle Slew stayed with the pack for most of the Winter Season. But it’s the homestretch that mattered the most as Slew broke away from the field to make his way into the Winner’s Circle and earn the 4SPT Winter Season Championship.
