Fall Season Game 12 Recap
It was another big night for Jay “The Outback” Coulbourne. Playing for the second time on the Tour since he first won six weeks ago, Jay dominated the field early on and survived at the end to earn him his second 4SPT title in as many tries.
The Outback’s domination began early at the opening tables as he built a commanding lead and kept the pressure on. Of course, he received a huge donation from the Globe IT department when Josh “The Rookie” and Jay “Big Boss Man” both went All-In on the same hand and were called by Coulbourne’s two pair. The Rookie’s pair of Kings couldn’t hold up while Big Boss Man, who earned this week’s “Head Scratcher” award, left everyone wondering why he moved All-In with just Ace-high against the chip leader.
Winning the biggest pot of the night was just the ammo Coulbourne needed to head into the Final Table the clear chip leader. It looked to be a battle for second because Jay held $8,000 of the $19,000 chips in play; the remaining $11,000 spread out evenly among the rest of the players. However, it soon became apparent that the Final Table wasn’t going to be the quick walk in the park the opening tables had been for the Outback as players kept slowly hammering away at the mighty chip stack.
On at least a few key hands, it certainly looked like Coulbourne’s chip stack would finally fall. The first time happened when we were down to six players and Chad “2-Trick” moved All-In when the flop came 8103. He was called by Coulbourne who showed a pair of 6s. 2-Trick was excited to see that hand as he flipped over A10. Could this be the first chink in the leaders armor? No. Unfortunately for 2-Trick, he was outdrawn on 4th Street when the 6h fell giving Coulbourne trip-sixes.
On the very next hand, I pushed All-In pre-flop with 10c10h. I was quickly called by Coulbourne and even more quickly called by Susan. Not good - until the flop hit 810J, giving me trip-tens. Coulbourne proceeded to bet Susan out of the side pot and it was time to show the cards. Coulbourne showed QJ. Having flopped the set against his pair of Jacks, I now had a chance to triple up and get back into the game. And then 4th Street brought the Q. Not really the card I wanted to see, but I still had a nice lead with just one card to go. But the Outback was able to suck out one of the remaining two Queens in the deck and I was out of the tourney as runner-runner Queen made me a full-house 10s full of Queens but Jay had me with Queens full of Jacks.
The final three had King Richard and The First Lady battling tough to stay alive. There was hope in the air that the monster could be brought down. The First Lady had scraped and clawed to keep herself in the game, allowing her to make a move that looked to be the turning point in the match. With blinds at 200-400 antes 100, Jay came into the pot for a $800 raise. The First Lady was having none of that, re-raising the chip leader to $1,600. Coulbourne called and led into the pot for $1,000 after the flop came Q75. The First Lady once again re-raised him by moving All-In for $2,300. Coulbourne called and showed QJ giving him the lead with a pair of Queens as the First Lady showed A7. She needed a 7 or an Ace to stay alive and that’s just what she got on 4th Street when the A fell. The river brought no help to the Outback and Jennifer took down a monster pot.
Having become the first chip leader since Coulbourne took over within the first hour of the night, the First Lady now had Coulbourne and King Richard on the ropes. They were hurting, and it looked like she was about to wrap things up until King Richard sucked her into a pot by slow playing his trip-sixes and moving All-In. It was the beginning of the end for Jennifer when she called and lost with her top pair of 9s. That beat opened the door just enough for Jay to climb back into the game. Eventually Jennifer lost her lead and finished in third. King Richard was not able to fend off the comeback and Jay Coulbourne was able to take it down and win again.
After repeatedly being told he couldn’t come back, let’s hope Jay “The Outback” Coulbourne learns how to take a hint…
New Nicknames
Jay “The Outback” Coulbourne
Kristen “The First Sister”
Sorry for the early confusion regardin my hand versus Jay. Turns out there was a Jack on the flop making us both full houses on the end.
I wasn't fully conscious when that last Queen hit on the river so my memory is a little rattled.
