Summer Shootout Recap

Sunday August 28th marked the first ever 4th Street Poker Tour Summer Season Major. With a documentary crew on hand to film this historic event, players began filing in to Club Med to register for the Summer Shootout.

Of course, the shootout format was another first for the 4SPT. For over a year the 4SPT has played the standard tournament format that involves balancing tables when players bust out by rotating new people in. In a shootout, no such balancing occurs and a player is required to outlast his table in order to make it to the Finals.

But the Shootout featured an even more historic 4SPT first, something so monumental, players who weren't there might find it hard to believe it even happened...

Congratulations to Al "The ALternate" for battling Richie (Summer Season Champion) and then Dino (Smoke 'Em II Champion) to take home his first 4SPT Major.  In an unprecdented move, Mr. Pick, who had won his opening table, decided to leave the tournament thus forfeiting his place at the Final Table and shot at his first major title. His spot was filled in by the ALternate who finished second to the Pick at Table 2.

We can't thank Zak and Nancy enough for letting us setup shop all day (and night). We really didn't think it would last as long as it did but they were gracious hosts throughout. Not even batting an eye we brought in the camara crew. Thank you.

There will be a game this week, I'll post the info as soon as we secure a location.

Summer Shootout

Howdy,

It's been a long, hot summer in this here bone orchard. Filthy city-folk outlaws the likes of Richie Rich and Mr. Pick have been trying to run this town and take all our dinero.

I say that me and you and our whole possee meet up at the old Club Med saloon on the day of the lord and ambush these varmints! Let's have ourselves a good ol' fashioned shootout and give them the beef!

The Details
TheSummer Shootout will feature 4th Street Poker Tour regulars and will be the final battle ground to determine the 2005 Summer Season Champion. This major tournament event will be held this Sunday, August 28th  at Club Med. Start time will be a prompt 2:00pm.

Entry fee is $30 ($25 to the main pot, $5 to the Sharpshooters).

The format has been changed from the regular freezeout style tournament we play every week to a good 'ol fashioned shootout. We will not be balancing the tables, instead we will play until there is a winner at each table. Those who collect all of the chips at their table will then move on to the Final Table where they will face the other single table winners. This unique format will have all the Final Table participants starting with equal stacks.

Sharpshooters
$5 of your entry fee will go towards the Sharpshooter portion of the tournament. Similiar to a headhunter event, the Sharpshooter is the person at each table that has the best aim and outlasts the entire table. Basically, each member of the Final Table will be a Sharpshooter and will go on to split this Sharpshooter prize pool.

Seating
Another change from our regular format, the Summer Shootout will be the first tournament to feature assigned seating. We will seat people in order of their Summer Season points standing beginning with our season champ - Richie Rich. If he's man enough to show, he'll be seated in Seat 1 at Table 1. Mr. Pick will be seated at Seat 1 at Table 2, etc. New players (or those of you who didn't make any points this season) will be folded in when we reach the end of the list.

Club Med
Zak and his wife Nancy are generously opening up their home for this tournament – meaning that we can accommodate up to 48 players.

We will send directions via email once we've confirmed your seat in the game.

RSVP
You must RSVP here in order to secure a seat in the Summer Shootout. We want to fill as many tables as possible, so we encourage you to invite anyone who would like to play.  However, priority seating will be given to people who have played on the Tour before. If you've never played on the 4SPT, please include the name of the person who invited you in your RSVP.

Because of our unique seating structure - it's really important that you RSVP by Saturday so we can have a list together.

There will be no POKER game this Thursday, August the 25th, but there will be bowling.

Richie Rich's impressive play throughout the Summer Season has earned him a freeroll into the Summer Shootout (and probably a large target on his back) on August 28, 2005.

Move over Vonnnnn Sannnnndmannnnn and make room for the Rich One. Richie Rich added the exclamation point to the Summer Season by taking down his 4th win this season, 5th overall, and the Summer Season Title. Congratulations on one hell of a season.

Some might say that winning after you've doubled up within the first level and then tripled up by the first break is really no great feat. In fact, having about $4,000 in chips at the color up and winning is hardly worthy of a recap. I mean, you should win right, how is this news? The winner himself attributes it all to luck, so what is there to write about, really?

I don't buy it. Not for a minute. Winning on the Tour is a diffucult thing to do, winning twice even moreso. I'm not buying the "it's only luck argument." I will give Zak the props he deserves, whether he wants them or not.

Zak started the night off as the hare. He raced out to a quick lead after dropping a straight like it was hot on Jamie. Doubling through within minutes helped him build a fearsome stack that only grew larger when he eliminated the First Lady by flopping trip 5s to her pocket Queens. Sprinting way out in front at the color up, it looked like Prefontaine was well on his way to crossing the finish line in record time.

In other action, Richie Rich was terrorizing table #2 by raising just about every hand. Meeting no resistance, he was able to pull himself up with the chip leaders. Heading into the Final Table, another big stack was being built by Oliver. Known as the Rabbit Eater, he caught the scent of the hare in the air and set his sights on Prefontaine. Taking a page out the tortoise's playbook, the normally agressive Oliver slowed things down a bit. Showing patience and restraint for most of the Final Table, Oliver found himself getting blinded away. But after moving All-In several times and stealing the ever escalating blinds, he found himself back in the match. Then by moving All-In with A2d against Richie Rich's 88, he found himself the Ace that put him back in the race.

Heading into the Heads-Up Showdown, the tortoise had made up considerable ground on the now sleeping hare. So much so that he came into the final two as the chip leader. Waking up to see Oliver nearing the finishing line, Zak decided that sprinting to the end was not going to get the job done. I mean, the hare tried this before and lost. So he slowed the pace down to the tortoise's pace.

But the Rabbit Eater couldn't resist his true nature. Like a wolf in sheep's clothing (or in this case, a rabbit hunter in a tortoise shell), the Rabbit Eater's early patience began to wane, specially while Zak kept folding and folding and folding. No longer able to contain himself, the Rabbit Eater pulled off a successful All-In bluff and then showed Zak his 82o. This move seemed to energize the hare and Prefontaine picked the pace back up. Calling Oliver's All-In with A3, he outran the Rabbit Eater's AT to the finish line and secured his second Tour win.

But I doubt we are witnessing the creation of any great dynasty...

Heading into Summer's last week and with the Season all but locked up by Richie Rich the 4SPT rolls into Oak Street. The Oak Street Honkeys have some defending to do after last week's pitiful performance.

Here's how the points race shapes up:

- Only one person can catch Richie Rich and that's Mr. Pick.

- Richie Rich can win the Summer Season Title with a 6th place or better finish. Regardless of where the Pick finishes.

- If Richie makes the Final Table, then the Pick would need to win the tournament to take over the Points Lead. If Richie places 7th then a win would only tie.

- If Richie misses the Final Table. Then the Pick would have to win the tournament to win the Season. He can force a tie with a second place showing.

- As always, in the event that there is a tie, we will hold a heads up match to determine who gets the title of Summer Season Champion.

Do or die for Mr. Pick as he needs either a 1st or 2nd place finish if he plans on knocking off the Rich One.

We also had two people take up Von Sandman up on his Heads-Up challenge. Slew was the first to try, and after 6 blind levels, Vaughn slewed Kevin. The Factor then got in on the action and took it down, picking up $70 to his $50.
